There are a variety of weight loss pills and supplements on
the market today that promise consumers can lose unwanted pounds; some even
guarantee it in 30 days or less. While most of these commercials and
advertisements are gimmicks, and results show a lack of evidence that herbal
supplements can assist in weight loss, there are a small number of diet pills
that actually work. Proven weight loss drugs have the backing of clinical
studies, approved by the FDA, and recommend an accompaniment of a low-calorie
diet with an implementation of exercise.
Phentermine
A drug classified as an anorectic,
Phentermine was approved by the FDA in 1959 and is commonly prescribed as an
appetite suppressant for obese patients. According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement
Administration, Phentermine is the most widely prescribed and most frequently
encountered diet pill on the market today.
Phentermine is available in
immediate and timed-released capsules and tablets, in various strengths ranging
from 15 mg to 37.5 mg. Physicians prescribe this drug, intended for short-term weight loss and not for use for longer than three consecutive months. According
to American Vein and Aesthetics Institute, users can expect an average weight
loss of eight to 12 pounds per month while taking Phentermine
Lonamin
Doctors prescribe Ionamin,
manufactured by Eon Labs, as an appetite suppressant. This drug was originally
developed and marketed as a replacement for amphetamines, and has been very
successful in assisting overweight patients lose an average of 10 pounds per
month.
Ionamin, according to Drugs.com, is
available in 15 mg and 30 mg capsules, and is considered to be a controlled
substance. Physicians must exam and consult with any patient requesting this
medication, since the abuse potential is extremely high.
Adipex
Another studied weight loss pill
with positive results is Adipex. Available by prescription, the FDA approved
Adipex as an aid to weight loss for a short-term period, when combined with
proper diet and exercise.
Patients taking Adipex can expect to
see a rapid weight loss of eight to 12 pounds per month, with reports of
extreme cases indicating that rare patients have lost as much as 30 pounds in
one month. Tremendous weight loss usually occurs in those individuals who are
morbidly obese to begin with, and have a lot to lose.
Eliminating thousands of calories
per month resulting from appetite suppression, and producing extreme weight
loss is unfortunately atypical. Dieters should aim to lose an average of two
pounds per week to stay on a healthy track, as weight loss exceeding this can
result in the inability to keep it off.
Alli
Orlistat, originally released in
1999 by prescription only under the brand name of Xenical, was approved by the
FDA in 2007 as an over the counter drug, marketed as brand name Alli. Alli is
available at drug stores nationwide and online in a 60 mg capsule that dieters
can take up to three times per day.
Alli claims to produce weight loss
by decreasing the fat absorption in the intestines, according to a report by
the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. During a four-week clinical study,
reports indicated that patients lost an average of nine pounds while taking 120
mg of Alli per day, or two-60 mg capsules.
Prozac
Fluoxetine, also known as brand name
Prozac, has links to weight loss in a number of patients. During a clinical
trial, individuals lost an average of seven pounds, according to American
Family Physician Journal, as opposed to those taking a placebo.
Prozac, an SSRI (selective serotonin
reuptake inhibitor), is typically prescribed for depression and anxiety. The
result of weight loss in patients was surprising, since most SSRI's reputedly
cause patients to gain weight. However, the effects were not long term, and
there is no evidence that Prozac can assist patients in effectively keeping the
weight off.
Warning
As with any medication, you should
consult with your physician prior to taking any weight loss drug. Take
considerations regarding any prescriptions you are currently on and you
physical history. Some weight loss pills can cause dependence and other
dangerous side effects.
